Migrating a Custom GPT to a Skill

You may have a Custom GPT that took hours of testing, rewriting, and edge-case fixes to make it dependable. With OpenAI changing where new GPTs can be created and expanding Skills as a reusable workflow architecture, that proven work is worth deliberately carrying forward. For this lesson, you will use an existing Custom GPT and follow a machine-guided migration process. Then, you will audit its configuration, convert the durable workflow into a Skill, test both versions with the same prompts, and repair only the differences that matter.

What you'll learn:

  • Audit a Custom GPT without reconstructing its workflow from memory
  • Convert proven GPT instructions and resources into a reusable Skill structureBullet
  • Identify Apps, Actions, and capabilities that need separate architecture decisions
  • Test the migrated Skill against the original GPT and diagnose meaningful differences
  • Repair migration failures at their root cause instead of stacking prompt patches
You do not need to rebuild your GPT from scratch or memorize a long migration checklist. Bring a GPT whose configuration you can inspect and access in an eligible ChatGPT workspace.
